Learning Center Roma Mahalla
To support returnees' successful reintegration, DRC Kosovo integrates community development initiatives into all its projects.
Among current projects, the DRC Kosovo Support for Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities in Mitrovicë/a in Roma combines economic development with activities geared towards community development.
The Learning Center in Roma Mahalla serves as a hub to promote education, cultural and environmental activities and women's empowerment.
Education
For the past three years, DRC Kosovo has provided kindergarten and homework support services to the growing number of RAE children and youth in Roma Mahalla in order to increase RAE children's chances to successfully participate in the mainstream school system in Mitrovica.
As adult literacy is still a major problem in the RAE community, DRC Kosovo also supports adults with basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Culture and environment
DRC Kosovo supports Shukarno Talenti a dance troupe started by RAE youths in Roma Mahalla. The dance troupe gives youths an opportunity to develop their skills and build their capacity as a self-organized group.
We also support community-driven initiatives to raise awareness of environmental protection and recycling. Small-scale environmental initiatives organized with the community included children and youth in cleaning Roma Mahalla and teaching about recycling topics in Kindergarten.
Women's empowerment
DRC Kosovo provided handicrafts training to the local women’s group to enable RAE women to develop their craft and to earn a modest income from selling their goods. Upon their own initiative, the women started making items from recycled plastic bags that they collect in Roma Mahalla and greater Mitrovica.
