From Football School to the Super League Group of Kosovo

Armis Avdiu was born in 2001 in Mitrovicë/a. Until 1998 his family lived in the village of Stan Tërg/Stari Trg Mitrovicë/a, in very bad living conditions. Armis now lives together with his parents in 2 Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje neighborhood in Mitrovicë/a, where he finished the 9th grade at “Bedri Gjinaj” primary school.

Due to very difficult economic conditions, Armis decided to drop out of school, in order to ensure some income for his family. With support from Danish Refugee Council (DRC), in 2015, Armis participated in a three-month vocational training on carpentry, at the Diakonie training center.

In July 2015, NGO PRAM with support from DRC started to implement the subproject “Football school”, financed by Sida, represented by the Swedish Embassy in Prishtinë/a. This subproject foresees to train more than 50 RAE children from Roma Mahala and 2 Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje neighborhoods.  “Knowing the talent that Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian children possess on sport of football, and in order to keep children away from negative influences, NGO PRAM with support of DRC started to draft the proposal for offering football classes to RAE children, and this idea was ”, stated NGO PRAM director Mr. Milaim Ramadani.

As soon as he heard about this subproject, Armis decided to register with this football school. In order to fulfill his childhood dream, Armis parents without any hesitation signed all paper works, in order to allow him to be part of the school.

“As a child I dreamed of becoming a football player, therefore I would like to thank my parents, my trainer at Trepça 89, NGO PRAM and all other organizations involved on this subproject for offering our communities this opportunity”.

Mr. Shkëlzen Avdiu, Armis’s father says that he is very grateful to NGO PRAM and DRC for helping his son to follow his dreams, because he personally couldn’t follow his dreams because of poor economic conditions.

In the beginning, among 50 RAE children, Armis is registered in the U-17 group, which trains twice a week, coached by a UEFA licensed coach. Now Armis is training also with FC Trepça 89 which plays in the Kosovo Super League, in the U-17 team.  Now, Armis was registered in the Kosovo Football Federation, and plays official matches for FC Trepça 89.

“I would like to thank his family for trusting me when we decided to bring him to FC Trepça 89, where he was accepted as part of the team in a remarkable way” said Lavdim Behxheti the coach of Trepça 89 for U13 and U17.

Danish Refugee Council Kosovo, with funding from Sida, as of March 2014, started implementing a 4-year Project: “Support to Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian Communities in Mitrovicë/a”. The Project aims to contribute to the stabilization and integration process of Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian women, men, girls and boys in Mitrovicë/a by providing the tools and support necessary for members of the Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian Communities and vulnerable members of the majority community to improve their future opportunities in education, employment and civic participation in a multi-ethnic Kosovo.

New Businesses graduate from DRC’s Social Business Incubator (SBI) Mitrovicë/a

On February 1st in 2017, 22 trainees from Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian Communities received certificates for successful completion of three-month training in Construction, Welding, Carpentry, Auto mechanic, Barber and Hairdresser at an event organized in Mitrovicë/a. Three businesses received graduation certificates from DRC’s Social Business Incubator. Deputy Mayor of Mitrovicë/a, Mr. Faruk Mujka held a speech where he stated that the municipality of Mitrovicë/a will continue to support DRC’s activities which are helping different communities to get higher education and trainings and prepare them for the job market. One of the graduated business owners stated that he is grateful to the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare for the training and for the help in trying to find better employment.

This graduation ceremony is a result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Ministry for Labour and Social Welfare and DRC’s Social Business Incubator in Roma Mahalla, which provides infrastructure to offer preparatory vocational training courses to youth from Roma Mahalla and the Mitrovicë/a region.

In close cooperation with the Employment Office Mitrovicë/a, DRC identified mentors to offer courses in: Construction, Welding, Carpentry, Auto mechanic, Barber and Hairdresser.

Under the 3rd round framework of the trainings, 22 trainees were registered in May 2016 through the Employment Office Mitrovicë/a. They attended trainings and got the opportunity to gain basic skills that will facilitate their further vocational education.

Trainings with qualified mentors took place three times a week for the duration of three months. Certificates issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare for successful completion of the course will enable better employment opportunities.

With this programme, DRC's Social Business Incubator contributes not only to the existing employment and vocational training infrastructure in Mitrovicë/a region, but also establishes closer links between members of Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian communities and the majority community.

The preparatory vocational training programme is funded by Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) under the umbrella of the project Support to Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian Communities Project in Mitrovicë/a.

SBI Vocational Training Centre has been established by DRC in July 2013 in cooperation with Regional Center for Professional Skills in Mitrovicë/a under the agreement with MLSW and Employment Office Mitrovicë/a.

Talent knows no boundaries: Shaban's story

Shaban Gashijan was born on 15th of August 2004 in the Cesmin Lug Camp in Mitrovicë/a North. From 2002 to 2007 his parents lived in Cesmin Lug in very bad conditions. In 2007 they returned to their home in Roma Mahalla in Mitrovicë/a. Shaban is in 6th grade at “Branko Radicevic” primary school in Mitrovicë/a North.

Since 2011 Shaban attended educational activities on homework support provided by DRC’s local implementing partner RADC Learning Centre in Roma Mahala. The aim of the Learning Centre is to increase the involvement of children of Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian communities in Mitrovicë/a, by providing additional education support through which Shaban gains more knowledge in order to find his place in the school system.

In July 2015, NGO PRAM with support from DRC started to implement the subproject “Football school”, financed by Sida, represented by Swedish Embassy in Prishtinë/a. In 2016 Shaban was registered at the Football School where he trains together with 50 children from Roma Mahala and 2 Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje neighborhoods that participate twice per week in trainings at the local football stadium. After one year of training at Football School, Shaban was selected by FC Trepça 89 to play as a professional football player for Super League of Kosovo/a for U13 team.

Thanks to Danish Refugee Council through funds by the Swedish International Development Agency, Shaban Gashian continues to attend educational and sports activities, which make him part of the society.

DRC Community outreach enables more youths and adults from Roma Mahalla and Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje to continue their education

As part of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) funded project “Support to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities” in Mitrovicë/a”, Danish Refugee Council (DRC) community workers organized a community outreach effort to identify youths and adults who did not complete secondary school. The outreach was conducted in Roma Mahalla and Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje neighborhoods from 28th of December 2016 to 5th of January 2017 by DRC’s community workers.

86 individuals were interviewed, 64 in Roma Mahalla, 12 in Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje neighborhoods. 6 youths and adults were identified as potential candidates (5 male, and 1 female) to continue their education. Thanks to these efforts they are now registered in Secondary Economic school “Hasan Prishtina” in Mitrovicë/a.

This new group of students will join the first group of 7 (5 male and 2 female) students who are already registered in the Adult education program since October 2016.

DRC and health institutions In Mitrovicë/a raise awareness to combat lead poisoning

DRC with the support of local NGOs and the Main Center of Family Medicine in Mitrovicë/a (MCFMM), has been engaged in efforts to combat the dangers of lead poisoning faced by the community in Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a through testing, treatment and prevention through awareness raising.

In May 2016, NGO PRAM and the Main Center of Family Medicine in Mitrovicë/a (MCFMM), with support of DRC organized blood tests for children of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities to assess lead levels. In the first round tests were conducted by MCFMM in Roma Mahalla and in 65 children found elevated levels of lead in their blood. Medications were given by MCFMM to decrease it.

Later another round of tests was performed, and only 9 out of 65 children tested showed elevated levels of lead in their blood. MCFMM will try to find free medicaments for these nine children.

In December 2016, DRC in cooperation with MCFMM held a lecture about "Prevention and protection from exposure of lead in the blood" for children of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in Mitrovicë/a. Most of the participants were from the “Football school” subproject, implemented by local NGO PRAM. The lecture was held at the Learning Centre in Roma Mahalla in Mitrovicë/a. NGO PRAM one of DRC’s local partners, works with 40 children from Roma Mahalla and 2 Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje that participate twice per week in trainings at the local football stadium.

To include parents in prevention efforts MCFMM hosted a follow-up lecture with the same topic where 19 parents participated. OSCE representatives from Mitrovicë/a regional center were also present at the event.

Mrs. Sabrije Uka, the health educator engaged by the Centre said to the participants: “You should take care of the environment where you live so that children can have a place to play, continue going to school and get higher education”.  Also Mr. Milaim Ramadani, PRAM Project Manager pointed out that “PRAM’s vision is to improve living conditions of the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian youth and children in Mitrovicë/a by helping them become active citizens. He stressed the urgency to find medications free of charge for the 9 children in need, and appealed for an urgent action to anyone who could support them”.

The subproject ‘Football School’ is implemented by PRAM within the “Support to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in Mitrovicë/a” project, financed by the Swedish Government.

Scholarship programme for Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian youth continues

As part of the Sida-funded project “Support to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities in Mitrovicë/a”, DRC continues to support education in Roma Mahalla.
In October 2016 DRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the secondary economic school “Hasan Prishtina” in Mitrovicë/a to continue with the secondary school education programme for 7 (2 female and 5 male) youths from Roma Mahalla and Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje.

This scholarship programme builds on the success achieved with similar initiatives in the past. In October 2014, DRC already supported 8 youths from Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje to complete secondary school. They were registered in the secondary economic school “Hasan Prishtina” in Mitrovicë/a South. 75% achieved their educational goal and got equipped with diplomas.

With continued support from Sida, more youths from the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian community will have a chance to finish their education. 

Peace Corps volunteers visit DRC projects in Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a

On 16 December, DRC was happy to welcome three US volunteers from Peace Corps Kosovo to its Sida-funded project activities in Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a. They visited DRC premises, the Social Business Incubator Foundation, the Learning Centre and local partners.

Welcomed by Social Business Incubator Foundation staff and Nana the Community Officer, the volunteers had the opportunity to visit the small startup businesses hosted at the incubator and the Vocational Training Centre whose trainees include women from vulnerable communities. The incubator assists businesses with skills trainings and workspace to put their entrepreneurial ideas into practice, while trainees at the Vocational Training Centre are mentored by experienced professionals enabling them to pursue careers in their chosen field.

A special highlight was the visit to the handicraft enterprise Gjuvlano Mangipe, which promotes handmade products made by Roma and Ashkali women from Roma Mahalla. In their showroom located in the Social Business Incubator, the women display their products and were happy to talk about their activities with the Peace Corps volunteers.

To learn about DRC’s educational activities in Roma Mahalla, the volunteers also visited the Learning Centre, which is run by a local NGO partner with support from Sida. At the centre, children of different age groups receive homework support among other things in order to bridge the learning gap caused by interrupted schooling and years of displacement. The visit provided plenty of ideas for possible cooperation in future.

All initiatives visited are funded by Sida within the framework of the Support to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities in Mitrovicë/a project implemented by DRC.

The Learning Centre Roma Mahalla celebrates International Day For Tolerance

On 16 November local implementing partner RADC organized an event in honor of the International Day for Tolerance. During the event children of all communities living in Mitrovicë/a worked on a book that reflects children’s vision about tolerance.  The event wasattended by the Directorate of Education, OSCE, school directors and children from 2 elementary schools in Mitrovicë/a. During this event, DRC delivered books in Romani language that are suitable for 1st to 3rd grade classes for the elementary education received from MEST.

When Hard Work Pays Off: Fitim's story

Fitim Krasniqi was born in 1992 in Mitrovicë/a, one of the most critical periods in former Yugoslavia. He has a big family, 11 siblings and all of them live together in Shipol/Sipole. The 90’s were difficult years that affected everyone in this region including Fitim’s family. Faced with difficult economic conditions, many members of the Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian minority communities dropped out of school. But not Fitim. He continued with his education even though he was the only one in his family working.

As a young child, Fitim set himself a goal. He would attend school and would find a good job to support his family. His efforts of securing a better future for himself and his family began in high school when he started taking English and IT classes and also got involved in different volunteer activities at a local youth center called "House of Hope”. After finishing high school he got accepted at the Traffic and Transport Engineering Faculty, at University of Prishtina and today he has one more year to finish his studies. Following Fitim’s example, his younger siblings are also attending school.

In April 2016 Fitim started working as a Community Worker within the “Support to Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian communities in Mitrovica” project that is funded by Sida and implemented by the Danish Refugee Council. Fitim supports the DRC team in implementing economic development activities, and actively helps with further developing the Social Business Incubator in Roma Mahalla, which DRC is championing in partnership with the communities in order to ensure their integration in Kosovo society. Recently, the incubator was registered as the ‘Social Business Incubator Mitrovica’ Foundation with Fitim as one of the co-founders.

He is also in charge of developing and maintaining productive working relationships with implementing and operational partners, local authorities and other stakeholders involved in the minority return stabilization and community development process.

Fitim is very happy with this job and continues to further educate himself. He is taking English language classes offered by the International Business College Mitrovicë/a with DRC support and DRC is also helping him to hone his fundraising skills. He is very motivated to continue his work with the Social Business Incubator and the social enterprise concept in general. Fitim is a very committed and dedicated young person and will continue to work hard to gain more knowledge and experience in order to serve communities in need.

Social Business Incubator trainees put their vocational skills to good use by improving access for people with disabilities in Roma Mahalla

22 Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian job seekers who registered with the employment office in Mitrovicë/a attended 3-month training courses at the Social Business Incubator (SBI) Vocational Training Centre for the following skills: carpentry, welding, construction, auto service, barber and hairdresser.

Besides their theoretical training, the trainees supervised by their mentors and the DRC project engineer also applied their skills in practice to serve their community’s needs in Roma Mahalla Mitrovicë/a.  Among other improvements in the neighbourhood, the trainees constructed a ramp for the Learning Centre to ensure dignified access to, and use of, the Learning Centre for people with disabilities.

Based on a Memorandum of Understanding between the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (MLSW) signed in March 2015, DRC organized these preparatory vocational trainings for marginalized groups in Mitrovicë/a for the third group of trainees this year.

SBI startup – Open invitation for cooperation in newly remodelled Canteen

Under the economic development component of the Sida-funded project ”Support to Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian communities in Mitrovicë/a”, the DRC Social Business Incubator (SBI) supports existing and new businesses through mentoring, business advisory services, equipment and work space.

At the SBI premises, DRC is looking for a new occupant for the canteen/cafe space. The 50m2 workshop is equipped with all necessary tools needed to run a canteen/cafe business. In order to be more attractive to customers and the community, the trainees of the SBI Vocational Training Centre, with support of the DRC Engineer, remodelled and planted trees in the garden next to the canteen, to make the surrounding area more inviting and green.

DRC is inviting the community in Roma Mahalla to apply with proposals for a new canteen/cafe business.

Currently, 9 start-up businesses operate within the DRC SBI, offering different services. 

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology donates books in Romani language to Roma Mahalla Learning Centre

Following a meeting between DRC and the Head of Division for Education of Communities of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), Ms. Nazan Safçi, MEST donated a set of books in the Romani language to the Learning Centre in Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a to support promotion of the Romani language among young children.

The MEST also provided information on the scholarship program for youth of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities and highlighted its commitment  to support RAE youth in their education.  

Roma Mahalla women's group organizes clean-up of Learning Centre to get ready for the coming school year

On their own initiative the women's group from NGO “Gjuvljano Mangipe” and two DRC community workers Sadeta Gashijan and Fitim Krasniqi, cleaned the green areas around the Roma Mahalla Learning Centre. They started this initiative to give their children a safe and clean environment when classes start for the new school year.
The women's group and the community workers also try to set an example for youth and the community at large to take responsibility for the environment they live in. In future, they are hoping to continue with such initiatives and involve more inhabitants of Roma Mahalla, in order to keep the neighbourhood clean and safe for everyone.

With support from DRC and funds from Sida, RAE women from Roma Mahalla, started with sewing and handicraft trainings

On 27/07/2016, with support from Danish Refugee Council and funded by Sida, NGO Women for Women International (WfWI) in cooperation with local NGO Gjuvljano Mangipe (GjM), started sewing trainings for RAE women of Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a.  DRC also offered 10 sewing machines and space (free of charge) for RAE women in Roma Mahalla.

This activity is part of the second component of the sub-project “Fostering Self-Reliance among Roma, Ashkali & Egyptian Women in Mitrovicë/a”. The second component foresees vocational trainings on sewing and handicrafts for a group of 13 RAE women from Roma Mahalla, which are very satisfied with the work of the trainer and are increasingly interested to learn new things.

The training sessions are being held every two weeks at the DRC Vocational Training Center, located in Roma Mahalla, and Mitrovicë/a.
All products made by RAE women will be exhibited at the Gjuvljano Mangipe showroom provided by DRC at the DRC Social Business Incubator and through different visits and fairs. 

Gjuvljano Mangipe presents their work at “Grate ne Biznes 2016”

Women Association “Gjuvljano Mangipe” with the support of DRC has participated in a three-day fair “Grate ne Biznes 2016” organized by Agency for Investment and Enterprise Support in Kosovo (KIESA) at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Republic of Kosovo, in cooperation with NGO "Grate ne Biznes".The fair was organized on 26th, 27th and 28th in Pristhina, in Skenderbeu square.
Beside project presentation, the fair was a good opportunity for “Gjuvljano Mangipe” to present and to sell their products.

“Gjuvljano Mangipe” is a group of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian women, skilled in handicrafts. “Gjuvljano Mangipe” is part of the Social Business Incubator established by the Danish Refugee Council Kosovo under the ‘Stabilization of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities Project in Roma Mahalla, Mitrovicë/a’. The project integrates economic development  and communities development  activities and is funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).

NGO “Gratë në Biznes” is established as a response to women’s needs in Kosovo, especially in the fields of entrepreneurship and business. More than two decades of experience in the sector of women’s economical empowerment & development, in rural and urban areas, enabled founders of “Gratë në Biznes”, to identify many barriers which prevent women to implement their ideas and initiatives to establish formal enterprises or business.

The fair was attended by around 60 women who are business owners or women's business associations, which deal with products or business services, from all communities living in Kosovo.
This year, the fair for lovers of local products has brought diverse products from different sectors such as agribusiness, cooking, crafts, textile and leather, souvenirs and much more, all produced and processed by women of Kosovo.

Participation in this fair was another step towards the achievement of meeting the Gjuvljano Mangipe’s goals. Gjuvljano Mangipe was the only NGO participating in this fair from the ranks of Roma Ashkali and Egyptian communities.
Although during the three-day participation in the fair, Gjuvljano Mangipe has not reached any great sales except some small products with symbolic prices, but thanks to the participation in the fair, Gjuvljano Mangipe promoted products and presented the mission, purpose and objectives of Gjuvljano Mangipe to donors, local and central institutions, different investors etc.
Thanks to better presentation of the NGO by Project Coordinator, Gjuvljano Mangipe office and DRC project site are visited by the Representative of the Communities - Office for Human Rights within the Ministry of Trade and Industry Mr.Gani Seferi, to look closer at activities that are implemented by Gjuvljano Mangipe and DRC in Roma Mahalla and Dy Korriku/Sitnicko Naselje in Mitrovica.

IBCM student supports subproject activities of DRC implementing partners

Continuing cooperation with IBCM, Danish Refugee Council office in Mitrovicë/a is hosting a new intern, Sara Morina, who will be engaged for a six month period and work with local NGO partners within the project funded by Sida.

Sara studies Marketing and Management program at IBCM and with her engagement in DRC’s community and economic development programs she expects to gain practical knowledge valuable for her future career.

Computer donation for the new Employment Office open in Zvečan/Zveҫan Municipality

DRC Social Business Incubator concept is developed in Roma Mahala in Mitrovicë/a, within the scope of the Sida funded project "Support to Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Communities in Mitrovicë/a."  In order to enhance possibilities of employment and trainings for the Roma Ashkali and Egyptian communities’ members, close cooperation with local authorities, public and private institutions is necessary and most valuable of it is with the Employment Office in  Mitrovicë/a.

Since Employment Office expanded in the north Kosovo region and new office was open in Zvečan/Zveҫan Municipality recently, DRC has received request for IT equipment. Transfer of assets has happened on Friday, August 5th, 2016. 

Constitution of the “Social Business Incubator Foundation Mitrovicë/a”

Following closely the Action Plan for Handover Process of the DRC’s “Support to RAE Communities in Mitrovicë/a” Project under the framework of its economic development component, DRC has continued enhancement of the Social Business Incubator (SBI) initiative that was established by the project, in terms of the benefits it brings to RAE communities as well as it is institutionalization through a public-private partnership.

Fully involving RAE community members and local authorities in the partnership, which will enable taking over full responsibility over the SBI initiative, DRC has supported the establishment of a local association featuring some of the characteristics of a social enterprise, utilizing expertize of the International Business School Mitrovica (IBCM)

After several meetings with SBI businesses, local institutions and authorities In Mitrovicë/a that have been taking place during June 2016, the prominent individuals were selected to serve on the new organization’s Board and Executive Committee as well as determining organizational statute, bylaws and board policies. The new non-profit organization has been established and named “Social Business Incubator Foundation Mitrovicë/a” (SBIMF)

The first constitutive meeting of the SBIMF Board of Directors was held on June 28th 2016  following with the strategic planning workshop  on July 12th 2016, both held at IBCM premises in south campus in Mitrovicë/a.

Project documentary raises awareness of recycling and inclusion of informal collectors

100 green club members from 5 schools in Mitrovicë/a South were invited to a screening of a documentary showing the results of the project ‘Strengthening Social Inclusion and Economic Empowerment of marginalized groups in Mitrovicë/a’, funded by the European Union and implemented by Danish Refugee Council.

As part of this project, 400 recycling containers were provided to schools, institutions and businesses to give citizens in Mitrovicë/a South the opportunity to recycle. In addition, the establishment of Social Enterprise treciklo helped create jobs for informal waste collectors and ensure recycling containers are regularly emptied and recycling in Mitrovicë/a increases.

The documentary gave students an insight into how their efforts to separate recyclable waste contribute to providing employment and better incomes for informal waste collectors and divert waste from landfills.

Green Club members were not only able to discuss ways of raising awareness of recycling in their schools and at home, but also to learn more about how social enterprises can help marginalized people find jobs.

Apart from the Social Enterprise treciklo, DRC also invited ‘Grate kryefamiliare’, a social enterprise supported by the European Union and run by widowed women from Mitrovicë/a. The women started a school buffet and catering business, which provides employment for 20 vulnerable women.

KFOR LMT and Portugal contingent support the "Football school" sub-project in Mitrovicë/a

Supported by DRC and UNMIK- regional center in Mitrovicë/a, LNGO PRAM received donations from KFOR LMT and the Portugal contingent as a result of outreach conducted by the PRAM Director, Milaim Ramadani. 47 RAE children from Mitrovicë/a RAE settlements, who are actively involved in PRAM project activities related to sport education,  received soccer shoes and clothing for their regular soccer practice.

PRAM’s project ‘Football School’ aims to contribute to the stabilization and integration process of Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian children and youth in Mitrovicë/a, and it is an integral part of the DRC “Support  to RAE communities in Mitrovicë/a” project that is financed by Swedish International Development Agency, represented by the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina.
